Marcellus Turner oversees The Seattle Public Library, which includes the world-renowned Central Library and 26 new or renovated branches. The Library operates on a $50 million budget and has approximately 640 staff members. The busy system served more than 14 million visitors last year and circulated nearly 12 million books and materials.
Turner is the former executive director of Jefferson County Public Library in Lakewood, Colo., where he managed a $27 million budget and a staff of 250.
Prior to joining Jefferson County Public Library in 2002, Turner was assistant executive director of the Rockford Public Library in Rockford, Ill. He also served as a departmental supervisor at both Tacoma Public Library in Tacoma, Wash., and Atlantic City Free Public Library in Atlantic City, N.J. In addition, he held several positions with academic libraries in Tennessee and Louisiana.
Turner holds a master's degree in library science from the University of Tennessee.

Gary Purcell Memorial Lecture
Wednesday Oct. 31 beginning at 11:30 AM, a lunch of sandwiches and salad will be served to those who RSVP for the lecture. At 12:15 PM, Suresh Ponnappa will present his Gary Purcell Memorial Lecture. These event will take place in the Scripps Convergence Lab theater on the 4th floor of the College of Communication and Information Building at 1345 Circle Park Dr.

Immediately following the lecture, a special ribbon cutting will take place at 2 PM dedicating the Gary Purcell Reading Room (room 434). This event is co-sponored with Hodges Library.  Light refreshments will be served.

Lunch with Marcellus Turner Friday November 2, alumni, faculty, students and SIS friends are invited to join us for an informal lunch with Marcellus Turner.  This is a great opportunity to meet and mingle with folks from our profession.  There will not be a formal presentation so that everyone will ample opportunity to network, listen and learn from each other!

Please RSVP so we will have plenty of lunch options for everyone.  This event will also take place in the Scripps Convergence Lab theater on the 4th floor of the College of Communication and Information Building at 1345 Circle Park Dr.

Annual Homecoming Brunch Celebrating Our 40th Anniversary Our signature event for the 40th celebration will culminate with this brunch.  Marcellus Turner will be the keynote speaker.  Previous Homecoming Brunches have been noted for delicious food, warm hospitality and a relaxed atmosphere for socializing and sharing with other library and information sciencetist. 

This is a unique opportunity and a perfect venue for the celebration.  If you haven't been on campus in some time, this is a great occasion for your homecoming!

Biddanda "Suresh" Ponnappa

Suresh Ponnappa

Suresh Ponnappa is a long friend of the School of Information Sciences. He currently serves on the College of Communication & Information's Board of Visitors. He is Professor and Associate Dean at the James H. Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City, Tennessee at East Tennessee State University (ETSU). His duties include Director of the Medical Library and Associate Dean for Learning Resources and Educational Technology. Prior to ETSU, Ponnappa worked for the University of Tennessee for twenty years.

Ponnappa is past president of the Tennessee Library Assocation and 2011 recipient of the TLA Honor Award. He was awarded the Elise Draper Barrett Award in 2010 by the Boone Tree Library Association and recieved the Distinguished alumni of the decade in 1980 from the School of Information Sciences, UT Knoxville.
