2018 Alumni Award Winners
Three with Ties to CCI Receive UT Alumni Awards
The UT Knoxville Alumni Board held its annual Alumni Awards celebration on Friday, September 7, 2018. Among the 2018 UT alumni award recipients were three with ties to CCI. Chris Grabenstein (BS/JEM ’77 & an emeritus member of CCI’s Board of Visitors) received the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Erin Hauck (BS/AD '07) received the Alumni Promise Award. Gregory Cox (BS/BA ’95; MS/Acct. ’96 & a current member of CCI’s Board of Visitors) received the Alumni Service Award. Find out more.

CCI’s Diversity & Inclusion Week 2018 Recap
The College of Communication and Information’s ninth annual Diversity and Inclusion Week, September 24-27, featured two keynote sessions including the Monday night keynote with Alison Bethel McKenzie, executive director of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). Bethel McKenzie, set the tone for the week by outlining SPJ’s efforts to educate, inform and uphold the SPJ Code of Ethics within the profession while dealing with the many challenges facing the news media in today’s hostile environment. She also stressed the importance of the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment and the critical role journalism plays in a democratic society. Find out more.

As part of the national Carnegie-Knight News21 initiative headquartered at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, UT senior and Knoxville native Andrew Capps spent seven months interviewing experts, attorneys, and victims about their experiences with hate crimes across America. When I chose to pursue my master’s degree in journalism and electronic media at UT, I wanted all the experience I could get, so I enrolled in Associate Professor Nick Geidner’s graduate class, Advanced Reporting Across Media. One day he walked into class and began talking about making a documentary about the 100 millionth book being given away by Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Find out more.

Harmon Receives National Press Club Award
JEM Professor Mark Harmon received the National Press Club's Angele Gingras Humor Award for humorous column writing in an awards ceremony at the National Press Club in Washington, DC on August 30. Competition Judges praised Harmon’s columns for “Crisp, clever writing often taking a creative look at a simple idea or detail.” Find out more.
