MICHAEL KENT joined the University Tennessee Knoxville in 2015 as a Professor of Public Relations. Kent has been teaching for more than 25 years and has taught more than 40 different courses. Kent conducts research on New Technology, Mediated Communication, Dialogue, International Communication, and Web Communication.

Kent's theory of dialogic public relations is highly cited and an influential theory of public relations. Kent has published dozens of articles and books in national and international journals, including a public relations writing textbook, and two public speaking textbooks. Most recently he guest edited a special issue of the Atlantic Journal of Communication on Social Media Theory. Kent sits on several editorial review boards including for the Atlantic Journal of Communication, Communication Studies, and Public Relations Review.

Recent activities include an ongoing Delphi Study of public relations professionals, and scholarship of dialogic theory. Visits to Hong kong and Australia in 2016, In 2014, Kent spent two weeks in Wuhan, China, at Huazhong University of Science and Technology; two weeks in Auckland, New Zealand at AUT (Auckland University of Technology); and two weeks in Brisbane, Australia at QUT (Queensland University of Technology). In 2006, Kent spent the fall semester in Riga, Latvia on a Fulbright Scholarship.
