Ying Xiong is a doctoral candidate in Public Relations at the University of Tennessee and expects to finish her Ph.D. program in May 2019. She got Master’s degrees of arts from the University of Oklahoma in the USA and the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China.
Ying’s research focuses are social network analysis, social movement, engagement, activism, and crisis communication. Her expertise in social network analysis and big data mining has been supported by two research grants: A summer research grant of $3,600 for networked social movement research from Knoxville Office of Research and Engagement Scholarly and Research Incentive Funds at the University of Tennessee and a research grant of $500 for social network analysis research from School of Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Tennessee. Ying’s research won the Top Student Paper at the Southern States Communication Association annual conference in 2018 and Top Student paper in the Public Relations Division at the National Communication Association (NCA) annual conference in Salt Lake City in November 2018. She has served as a reviewer for ICA, NCA, and Public Relations Review.
She has taught Public Relations Research Methods and Public Relations Campaign. She assisted several courses, such as Public Relations Cases, Public Relations Research Methods, and Mass Communication Law.
Currently, she works as an Assistant in Residence in Adam Brown Social Media Command Center offering training opportunities to students, faculty, and staff affiliated with the college. She formerly worked as a graduate assistant in the Media Effect Lab at the University of Oklahoma for eye tracking, Galvanic Skin Response research, and health communication studies.
Prior to returning to her Ph.D. program, she worked in a public relations agency assisting Toyota’s national public relations campaigns.
